Dear [YOUR MP],

I am emailing regarding the ongoing conflict in Israel/Palestine and the response of British politicians to it.

As you are no doubt aware, there continue to be alarming reports concerning allegations of Israel’s infringement on Articles 33, 49 and 54 of the Geneva Convention, which relate to the collective punishment and forcible transfer of civilian populations during armed conflicts, as well as the safeguarding of items vital to the survival of civilian populations.

It is absolutely vital that the UK takes a clear, proactive and robust stance on this issue. Just as Hamas must be held accountable for its actions, so must the Likud-led government of Israel. This is especially important given the hugely disproportionate strength of Israel’s military.

Since the beginning of the conflict, I have also been deeply disturbed by statements from leaders and elected MPs representing both main political parties, particularly those made by both the prime minister and the leader of the opposition.

The reluctance to acknowledge the human rights of Palestinian civilians and to condemn those actions taken by the Israeli government and military which violate international law, is indefensible.  Furthermore, the unqualified support, both material and rhetorical, given to Israel may in itself amount to violations of articles 8, 25, and 27 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court which prohibits aiding, abetting and assisting in the commission of war crimes or crimes against humanity.  Given the extensive legal experience of many members of parliament, it might have been hoped that these things would be understood and I cannot, therefore, adequately describe the disappointment and anger this has caused.

I would respectfully request that you to consider the following actions:

•Bring this issue to the House of Commons to seek clarity on the UK’s stance regarding these concerns, holding the government to account where necessary

•Urge both the prime minister and leader of the opposition to issue public apologies and unequivocal statements emphasising Israel’s responsibility to uphold international law, including as it relates to articles 33, 49 and 54 of the Geneva Convention

•Engage with international organisations including the United Nations, to ensure that allegations of violations of international law are thoroughly investigated

•Advocate for diplomatic solutions that promote compliance with the principles of the Geneva Convention by all parties involved in the Israel-Palestine conflict

Thank you for taking the time to read this email. I have faith that you will give this matter the attention it merits.

Yours sincerely,
